The Metals Environmental Research Associations (MERA) are supported by the Cobalt Development Institute (CDI), Eurometaux, the European Aluminium Association (EAA), the International Copper Association (ICA), the International Chromium Development Association (ICDA), the International Council on Mining and Minerals (ICMM), the International Lead Zinc Research Organization (ILZRO), the International Molybdenum Association (IMoA), the International Zinc Association (IZA), and the Nickel Producers Environmental Research Association (NiPERA). These organizations serve as research arms of the international metal industries for aluminum, chromium, cobalt, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel and zinc.
All MERA supporters sponsor environmental and ecotoxicological research throughout the international scientific community, and strive for peer-review publication of results. By combining financial and intellectual resources, MERA supports research that advances knowledge on the environmental hazards and risks of these metals. Recently, MERA has supported comprehensive incorporation of metal ecotoxicology principles into regulatory risk assessment programs, including the European Union's Existing Substances Risk Assessment regulation. These principles, described in MERAG and HERAG documents, include bioavailability, essentiality, and accounting for variation of natural background concentrations. Communicating advances in metal ecotoxicology that support bioavailability normalization of metals in water, sediment, and soil has facilitated acceptance of bioavailability-based environmental quality standards for metals.
